ziga_I am trying to create a "makefile" example which is in some folder which is not part of Yocto. I created a recipe and used (a) inherit externalsrc, (b) EXTERNALSRC = <path to sources> (this path has "main.c" and "makefile" inside), (c) EXTERNALSRC_BUILD = <path to build folder>, (d) SRC_URI += "file://main.c file//makefile". Then a recipe has a "do_compile(){make}" task and that is it. When I run the recipe it complains: "do_fetch: Fetcher09:07
ziga_failure: 0Unable to find file file://makefile" I tried removing SRC_URI -- in this case do_compile() runs and prints error: "make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found.  Stop." How do I specify sources???09:07
qschulzziga_: remove your custom do_compile09:08
qschulzziga_: there's usually no need to redefine EXTERNALSRC_BUILD09:09
qschulzexcept if your makefile is broken, in which case you might want to make it point to the same directory as EXTERNALSRC09:10
ziga_@qschulz  Hmmm. Now it compiled. How do you mean I should not redefine EXTERNALSRC_BUILD? I just defined it once.09:10
qschulzziga_: because therer's already a default for it09:11
qschulzhttps://docs.yoctoproject.org/ref-manual/classes.html#ref-classes-externalsrc09:11
qschulzziga_: do_compile also has a default09:12
qschulzwhich is oe_runmake09:12
ziga_Okay. Now bitbake did run without errors, but there is no binary in the EXTERNALSRC_BUILD folder.09:12
qschulzwhich passes Yocto specific flags to make09:12
qschulzziga_: checkout the logs in ${WORKDIR}/temp/log.do_compile09:13
qschulzbut now it's debugging time09:13
qschulzprobably some things are wrong in the makefile09:13
qschulzit's very common to get it wrong09:13
qschulzespecially for cross-compilation09:13
qschulzif you have a choice, use cmake or meson09:13
ziga_Makefile is extremely simple: """"all: main  \n   gcc -o main main.c   \n .PHONY: clean clean: @rm -r main""""09:14
qschulzwell, there it is, already wrong :)09:15
ziga_Should I use Yocto variables instead of "gcc"?09:15
ziga_Like ${CC} ?09:15
qschulz$CC $CFLAGS $LDFLAGS09:15
ziga_I test. Wait!09:15
qschulzyou can set  adefault at the beginning of the makefile with CC ?= gcc for example09:15
ziga_I changed "gcc" for $CC $CFLAGS $LDFLAGS and it failed. Am I missing the {} ???09:18
qschulzziga_: whatever the correct syntax for Makefile variables is09:19
qschulzmight be parentheses actually09:19
ziga_I tried and again id did not work.09:19

qschulzrburton: CC ?= gcc10:03
qschulzziga_: ^10:04
qschulzhttps://www.gnu.org/software/make/manual/make.html#Reference seems like ${CC} and $(CC) are both valid10:04
qschulzziga_: your EXTERNALSRC path is probably incorrect because "NOTE: nothing to compile" means it couldn't find a makefile10:07
qschulzziga_: I think you should set EXTERNALSRC_BUILD to EXTERNALSRC10:08
qschulzbecause do_compile is run in EXTERNALSRC_BUILD10:08
qschulzziga_: it'd also help if we had the content of the recipe10:10
*** zyga-mbp <zyga-mbp!~zyga@31.0.173.147> has joined #yocto10:12
ziga_This is the recipe: https://pastebin.com/xTchg6bt10:19
qschulzziga_: remove the SRC_URI they are no-ops here since SRC_URI looks next to the recipe and not in EXTERNALSRC10:20
qschulzmake EXTERNALSRC_BUILD point to the same path as EXTERNALSRC10:20
olaniziga_: I hate to say it, but that Makefile is broken.  For a project this simple you should get away with https://gist.github.com/snogge/258f4b44e02752c9f974bb2126f9207b10:22
olaniziga_: Make will do very many things for you out of the box.10:23
olaniziga_: I'm not sure I got the tab-characters right in that gist, make sure to check.10:24
olaniziga_: If you want to use the Makefile outside OE, you'll want to add a default for bindir: bindir ?= /usr/bin10:25
qschulzolani: before adding an install target, we need it to compile something :)10:25
olaniqschulz: And it should.  Make has default rules for building an exe from a single c-file.10:26
qschulzolani: yet it does not, so we need to fix this first and I'm 99% sure it's an issue with the recipe. Next pain point would have been the install target like you highlighted10:27
qschulzand this sums up why somebody should try to not create new projects with makefiles in 2022 :)10:27
olaniqschulz: Pshh!  Make is great :)10:28
ziga_olani: I think you are wrong about the makefile. @qschulz was right. It compiled if I put same path to EXTERNALSRC_BUILD & EXTERNALSRC. But why? Can I keep these two in a separate folder?10:29
olaniziga_: Your makefile happens to work.  It's still wrong. I'll explain later10:29
olaniziga_: Make uses the same build and source directory unless you tell it how to use separate.10:30
olaniziga_: So you need EXTERNALSRC and EXTERNALSRC_BUILD to point to the same dit.10:30
olanidir10:30
ziga_olani_: Ah... I thought that Yocto somehow automates this! :////10:31
ziga_olani_: One more question. How can I make sure that bitbake will run the appropriate compiler i.e. "arm-gnu-eabi", "arm-none-eabi"... once it runs that makefile?10:32
olaniziga_: do nothing :)  Try the makefile I gave you.10:32
qschulzziga_: by using $(CC) like you did and checking the ${WORKDIR}/temp/log.do_compile10:33
qschulzalso, Yocto checks the arhictecture of binary files matches the expected one, so you'd have a big warning (or a failure) if the wrong toolchain/compiler is used IIRC10:33
olaniziga_: Make uses the CC variable, and has a usable default for it.  bitbake will set CC as an environment variable and override the makefile default10:33
ziga_So I should just avoid defining CC = gcc at the top and use ${CC} in the line that actually compiles the program? Bitbake will then replace ${CC} automatically?10:34
olaniziga_: yes10:34
ziga_Ah okay.10:34
ziga_Thank you very much.10:34
qschulzziga_: you can have CC ?= gcc at the top to have a sane default, but it's not necessary10:35
qschulz(it's in case your desktop distribution does not set this variable when you compile manually)10:35
olaniqschulz: I'm pretty sure make has ok defaults for CC.10:36

Wouter0100Howdy guys! I'm not sure were to search/ask for help, but I'm buiding a Yocto image using Poky (&KAS) and the Node-performance (and performance of another process) seems to really suffer. In the past we had a Raspbian image, which worked just fine and fast - but with our own image performance suffers a lot. I've done 2 strace's with `-c` (same RPi12:14
Wouter01003b) on both images, and you see that it takes WAY longer to start Node: https://paste.ee/p/tzZX7 (15 seconds vs ~0.5 seconds). Some syscalls are called a lot of times as well (e.g. `mprotect`). Anyone any idea what this could be? Are we missing some DEBUG vars or so? Thanks!12:14

Michael90I am trying to trim my yocto image. One suggestion from the mega manual is "To eliminate all the packaging requirements for an image, be sure that "package-management" is not part of your IMAGE_FEATURES statement for the image. When you remove this feature, you are removing the package manager as well as its dependencies from the root filesystem."17:05
Michael90Can someone point me to the file I would look for this information?17:05
Michael90When I do a "grep -r package-management *" many files show and none are what I expect17:06
rburtonyour image recipe, or possibly local.conf, will be adding package-management to IMAGE_FEATURES17:06
rburtondo 'bitbake -e [imagename]', search that for IMAGE_FEATURES=, and above you'll see where the changes occur17:06
Michael90In my local.conf there is an EXTRA_IMAGE_FEATURES += " package-management" It is using package_deb.  Would there be any other place telling my build to use a package manager?17:07
