sashkoHello. Bitbake crashes terminal app (or perhaps bash?) leaving me with no logs. Any suggestions on how to debug the issue?10:50
ptsnevessashko run bitbake inside an extra shell10:51
ptsnevesi guess you are having an error in the sourcing script and it closes the shell?10:51
sashkono, it happens during configure or build stage on some heavy packages10:52
ptsneves( . oe-init-build-env <build dir> && bitbake <something>)10:52
ptsnevesok then i do not know why your terminal app would close10:52
sashkoit's probably resources related as Linux starts to close other apps, e.g. firefox10:53
ptsnevesah ok. If this the case you can try to set some swap for example10:54
ptsnevesi do not know if bitbake has a way of setting the max memory. I know it can set CPU nice but that is all10:55
sashkoran it inside additional shell and it crashed terminal app10:55

sashko1610:56
qschulzwhat people do is usually limit the number of threads10:57
sashkomonitoring memory usage, I don't see it used 100%10:57
LetoThe2ndsashko: you can do a BB_NUMBER_THREADS = "4" for example.10:57
LetoThe2ndqschulz: was already typing.10:57
sashkoqschulz: I set BB_NUMBER_THREADS = "1" and PARALEL_MAKE = "-j 1"10:58
LetoThe2ndsashko: then what would that "heavy packages" be, for example?10:58
sashkou-boot-fslc and qtbase10:58
LetoThe2ndu-boot is not heavy.10:58

sashkogot lucky and it didn't crash; the problem was "out of memory"11:08
qschulzI have built qtbase (with buildroot though) on a 4c/8t 16GB machine without too much hassle11:08
sashkoit's 4c/8t 16gb, so I'm really surprised11:09

qschulzbut if you're staying with officially supported DE by your distro, you probably won't have the same issues I had11:11
sashkoright systemd-oomd, it's new to me - just upgraded to latest ubuntu11:11
sashkowell, I do running "vanilla" gnome ubuntu11:12
qschulzsashko: if this is a work PC, just ask your company to buy a desktop or a server for it11:12
qschulzbecause it's going to be painful building often on that kind of hardware11:13
sashkoit is. I will, but need to continue now somehow...11:13
sashkowill try adding swap and tweaking systemd-oomd11:13
ptsneveswow 4c/8t 16 is slow? :O11:13
qschulzptsneves: well, my CPU is a laptop Intel U version.. so yes, slow :)11:13
ptsnevesif you add swap you will not have crashes and you will let the OS cache out some stuff while building.11:13
qschulzptsneves: incorrect, I have 8GB of swap on nvme and systemd-oomd still killed my terminals11:14
sashkoqschulz: did you manage to find "better" settings for oomd?11:15
qschulzsashko: sort of, there is a special systemd unit for my desktop environment that I had to install11:19
qschulzseems to have been enough11:19

qschulzptsneves: that might be halstead. I've never used the web interface to send a mail before but aren't you supposed to be subscribed to the mailing list to send a message without going through moderation?15:05
ptsnevesqschulz thank you for the suggestion. I will ping him. Technically you are right, and i think if i wrote an email it would just bounce back. As i used the group.io web interface it just popped a modal saying that my message went into moderation.15:06
ptsneveswhich kind of sucks. It should never accept anything and "bounce" like the email15:07
qschulzptsneves: you can always resend the mail, but since it seems you haven't saved the content that isn't an option right now :)15:07

Saur[m]cambrian_invader: If you have built the package, then you can use `oe-pkgdata-util lookup-recipe <package>` to determine what recipe produced the package.20:28

vmesonturkeykittin: can you explain what you mean? Are you refering to the cython recipe in oe-core: http://cgit.openembedded.org/openembedded-core/tree/meta/recipes-devtools/python/python3-cython_0.29.28.bb?h=master23:48
turkeykittinUnfortunately not as I am on dunfell (3.1) and the earliest release of cython in yocto was 3.123:49
turkeykittin3.1*23:49
turkeykittin3.2***23:49
vmesonturkeykittin: ah, did you try to backport it?23:50
turkeykittinSo I have been trying to see if I could target it anyway and build using the SDK23:50
turkeykittinNo, didn't use the recipe, just tried to use it by hand23:50
turkeykittini.e. source the SDK at 3.1 and install cython via pip and try to execute23:51
vmesonturkeykittin: okay, maybe someone will have more input but I haven't even played with cython, so I'm no help.23:51
turkeykittinWhat about pybind11? :LP23:51
turkeykittin:P*23:51
turkeykittinMan, lots of fat fingering today23:52
vmesonturkeykittin: well, it is Moonday23:52
turkeykittinunfortunately everyday is a work day for me :S23:52
turkeykittinjust different levels of sleep deprivation23:53
turkeykittinBut yeah I've been trying all sorts of methods to get some CPP and python bindings to work nicely on my yocto build. About to force everything into Hardknott as I just discovered a lot of my dependencies are finally updated to work with it23:53
vmesonturkeykittin: I'm not much of a pythonista... hopefully someone else will help out. It might be good to as a more specific question here or on one of the email lists.23:55
turkeykittinvmeson: unfortunately it would probably go unanswered especially with a lot of detail because of how particular my setup is. However, hopefully if I get to Hardknott and things are still not working, I can at least ask about the in-built cython recipe and have a more standard configuration to work with... A fresher, non-thrashed environment :X23:58
vmesonturkeykittin: ok, good luck!23:59
