mcfriskSchlumpf: if the file is generated, you can modify it with a do_install_append() in a .bbappend08:47
mcfriskSchlumpf: if the file is part of SRC_URI and for example next to the recipe in meta layer, then patching it is tricky, though you can easily remove the original version from the recipe and replace with your version which is next to your .bbappend08:48

Schlumpfmcfrisk qschulz: Thanks for the answer. The file is part of SRC_URI. My current workaround is to call "patch -p1 < ${WORKDIR}/0001-mute.patch-before-install" in a do_install_prepend(). I wonder what the right approach is. Since I only want to change one line, replacing the whole file might be a bit to much.09:10

Schlumpfqschulz: you are right. do_patch() is the better place. I'll create a do_patch_append().09:38
Schlumpfmcfrisk: Since I only want to change one line in a larger script, I think I will stick to patching instead of replacing the whole file. I think it will be clearer what my layer is doing here.09:38
SchlumpfIf I understand you correctly, patching files outside the folder is not intended with on-board tools. Such files are rather replaced. If I want to do it, I have to make something myself.09:38

mcfriskSchlumpf: in those cases I used sed in a do_install_append() of a .bbappend. This was more reliable to updates than patch files.10:27
qschulzmcfrisk: the risk with using sed is that you don't know when it stops working because the line disappeared or the context around it10:28
qschulza patch helps with that (though sometimes patches apply in the wrong location but I haven't seen that happen more than once in my lifetime :)10:29
mcfriskyep there are pros and cons with any approach10:29
mcfriskoh I've seen so many patches being applied and rebased wrongly. just think of many vendor kernels and their 'mandatory set of patches'10:30
mcfriskbut if use is like changing or adding line systemd service files, patches may be annoyingly strict across updates while a single string replacement is what works.10:31

TyakuOr is there a way to regenerate all the files in deploy directory ? (in case where they has been removed manually).12:44
LetoThe2ndTyaku: not as far as I know. another reason to not do things in there manually ;-)12:58
ramacassis[m]hi, I just saw this post about overriding entire recipes https://stackoverflow.com/questions/56083565/upgrading-overriding-an-entire-recipe-in-a-custom-layer13:11
ramacassis[m]is it a good practice if I create a "meta-upgrade" that will only contain these upgraded recipes ? are there other ways ?13:11
jclsnramacassis[m]: Why not use a .bbappend?13:18
qschulzTyaku: rburton said a few days ago: you can force a deploy with bitbake myimage --cmd deploy --force13:19
qschulzbut in short, either remove all the tmpdir or don't touch ikt13:19
qschulzramacassis[m]: by upgrading you mean more recent versions of the same recipe or fixing issue in them?13:19
qschulzif it's more recent versions, then we highly recommend you create a new recipe13:20
qschulzsome people even go as far as recommending copying the .inc files so that if they get changed in upstream layers you are not impacted by the changes13:20
ramacassis[m]jclsn: because there is a huge gap between my recipe version (dunfell) and the upgraded one (in kirkstone for instance), plus there are new CVE patches and fixes that are useful13:22
*** zpfvo <zpfvo!~fvo@i59F5CCAC.versanet.de> has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 268 seconds)13:22
qschulzramacassis[m]: much easier to maintain if you copy the whole recipe13:23
qschulzand also way less confusing13:23
jclsnTrue13:23
ramacassis[m]so, copy the whole upgraded recipe and files in "meta-upgrade" and write a .bbappend for my own patches and files in "meta-my-software" ?13:25
ramacassis[m]if I have the right philosophy in mind, I should not have a .bb and .bbappend in the same layer13:27
