enok71Can anyone please help me understand what exactly what u-boot does with a FIT image when using "standard boot"? I understand it attempts to use a default "configuration" section which refers to a kernel image and a dtb image both contained in the FIT image. But are there any more options? Can there be a bootscript in a fitimage that gets executed? I succeeded making yocto add a uEnv.txt u-boot environment file to the FIT, but 20:36
rboxi used to put fpga images in my fits20:37
*** vladest <vladest!~Thunderbi@adsl-89-217-204-83.adslplus.ch> has joined #yocto20:38
enok71@rbox and what happened? Did you find any way to add any u-boot commands that gets executed at any point?20:38
rboxit would lod it20:38
rboxnever t ired20:39
rboxyo ucould read the esource to see what type of things i can parse out of it20:39
rboxi would load my fit and then run a custom command i added to uboot20:39
rboxto do my magic20:39
enok71Ugh. Yes I will have to read sourcecode. Cause I already read through the latest documentation, and it's stil very unclear how this works or how to do basic stuff.20:40
enok71When you say "load my fit", do you mean having a bootscript running e.g. bootm?20:41
rboxmy bootcommand was actually 'myspecialcommand && bootm'20:41
rboxmyspecialcommand would load the fit into memory, and then bootm would boot it20:41
enok71cause the preferred way nowadays seems to be without bootscripts, just "bootflow scan" which performs everything.20:41
rboxand do abunch of other special stuff20:41
rboxthe loading from memory and special stuff was the tricky part, because i was doing funky stuff with placing my kernel iamge in relation to my system partition20:42
enok71And where did you define 'myspecialcommand'? uboot environment variable? or sourcecodepatch?20:43

rboxsource code20:43
rboxi can't imagine doing that in uboot script20:43
enok71Ok. I used to feel I was able to do anything in a uboot script, but with this "bootflow scan" and "extlinux.conf" there is suddenly no way of doing anything except going back to modifying u-boot sourcecode. Seems like a step backwards.20:45

rboxwell you could read the extlinux parser20:48
rboxor just not use bootflow20:48
rboxlol20:48
rboxi lost track of how many years they'v ebeen saying 'sf' is deprecated20:49
rboxbut it still works20:49
enok71There seems to be no way of adding dtbo overlays anymore, with "standard boot" (bootflow), it's just missing functionality. At least that's stated in the u-boot documentation: "todo: overlays".20:49
enok71Yes good point.20:49
rboxto be honest, i really hate how uboot works with their environment nonsnese20:49
rboxi dont want to save logic to my env block20:50
rboxi want to save v ariables there20:50
enok71True.20:50
rboxi would even patch the code to remove useless crap that was ending up there by default20:50
enok71Ok will try to disregard the "deprecated" text and select bootscript in the u-boot config, ditching bootflow and "standard boot". And be less afraid of modifying the sourcecode.20:51
rboxoh, patching uboot sucks20:51
enok71The way to go apparently.20:52
enok71But patching uboot was what you did to implement "myspecialcommand" right?20:52
rboxi think you can put binary blobs in a fit20:52
rboxcan't you run a script from a location in memroy?20:52
rboxwell yeha, but it still sucks to patch uboot20:52
rboxlol20:52
rboxespecially when it comes to updating20:53
enok71If I interrupt the boot and get a uboot prompt I can do anything. But I find no way to do anything automatically without bootscript.20:53
rboxwell you cuold make your bootcommand a mile long20:54
enok71True. That's one way.20:54
rboxi had a complciated one... it would check if netboot varialbe was set, if it did, it would dhcp && bootm otherwise it would myspecialload && bootm20:54
enok71Nice.20:55
rboxi also patched the code that would modify the fdt beforing handing it off to the os20:55
enok71I would like to add overlays in the fitimage to the dtb, and then boot with bootm. Could perhaps be done with a looong bootcommand line.20:56
rboxi only got a little into overlays, but i handled that in a systemd service on boot20:57
rboxit would figure out which fpga id it was running on and load the correct overlay for that, then figure out  the hardware version, and load the correct overlay for that20:58
enok71Then you had your kernel patched and configured to be able to modify the devicetree at runtime?20:58
rboxthe kernel supports overlays?20:59
rboxnothign to patch20:59
rboxactually, maybe i read once it was a vendor patch21:00
rboxi dont know how that worked21:00
rboxi thought it was a base feature21:00
enok71If you have "CONFIG_OF_CONFIGFS=y" in /proc/config.gz then you have a patched kernel adding this feature.21:01
rboxoverlay stuff was in my xilinx kernel ,adn it looks liek its in my rpi kernel21:03
rboxbut i'll be damned, its not in mainline21:03
enok71Maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's in mainline kernel nowadays.21:03
rboxhttps://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/drivers/of/Kconfig#L9921:03
rboxbut that is there?21:03
rboxbut yeah, CONFIGFS isn't but thats in my rpi kernel21:04
enok71Ok. Yes.21:04
enok71Thanks for the hints anyway. (Adding that patch to the kernel and doing it after boot is perhaps not a bad way)21:05
