dodoradio@smurray me again, the guy with the 64 bit kernel 32bit device. A few questions:14:26
dodoradioso I've now got one multiconfig set up and one default machine set up. I've marked my kernel recipe compatible only with the 64 bit machine. when I run `MACHINE=device bitbake mc:device-64bit:linux-device` I get the error 'linux-device skipped: incompatible with machine `device`' I'm confused, why does it care about compatibility with the selected machine if I'm specifically requesting a multiconfig build?14:29
dodoradiowhere should I put `BBMULTICONFIG`? currently I've got that in machine.conf, but that doesn't seem like the right place14:37
dodoradioand finally, how can I modify the default multiconfig?14:37

khemmulticonfigs are good and wider scoped. If you are trying to build say 64bit kernel + 32bit rootfs meaning the CPU it runs on remains same then just multilib would suffice and I think might be more appropriate17:28
khemhowever, if you have to build an image for a system comprising of different processing units then mutliconfig is useful and apt17:29
JaMadodoradio: aren't you from LGE? :)17:29
dodoradionope. I'm working in the asteroidos project17:29
JaMawe use multilib for this scenario, it's not ideal, but it works OK17:29
dodoradiowho have you managed to confuse me with? 🤣️17:30
dodoradioIf you look at the logs from two days ago, I explained why multilib doesn't work for my purpose - I really do need the watch to behave as a 32 bit device with 64 bits being used for only the kernel17:31
JaManobody specific (don't recognize your nick), but wouldn't be surprised if someone from LGE would try to replace multilib with multiconfig17:31
JaMadodoradio: that's what we do for last couple years17:31
JaMa21:11 < dodoradio> I've tried multilib but this ends up with armv7 packages and essentially identical but incompatible multilib-armv7 packages17:33
JaManot sure what you meant by that17:33
dodoradiobasically we need to serve armv7 packages for all our watches from our packaging servers, but the mutilib device requires multilib-armv7 packages which are identical but not compatible17:34
JaMawhy they are incompatible for you?17:34
JaMaand what do you mean by multilib-armv7 packages? you can set any DEFAULTTUNE for both arm and aarch64 builds in multilib17:35
dodoradioThere's no advantage to having the device know that it's 64 bit, that only affects the kernel. having the device be 64 bit otherwise will just cause issues when users try to install 64 bit binaries that won't work17:37
JaMait doesn't if you build lib32-<image> and adjust few things to prevent 64bit packages in being installed17:38
JaMa64bit will be used only for kernel and e.g. external kernel modules, everything else can be 32bit17:39
JaMawith ocassional issue like https://git.openembedded.org/openembedded-core/commit/?id=c74697e194fe07cb4a2fee45142ae626996fd29417:39
JaMaor when someone added shell script to package with external kernel module and it pulled 64bit bash into the image as RDEPENDS, that's easier to spot if you restrict COMPATIBLE_HOST for recipes which you really don't want to build as 64bit for this MACHINE with multilib17:41
dodoradiois there really no way to get multilib working as described here https://docs.yoctoproject.org/singleindex.html#bundling-an-initramfs-image-from-a-separate-multiconfig ?17:41
JaMayou still didn't say what doesn't work, so I give up and will do something more useful with my time17:43

dodoradiosorry about that. I had two reasons for rejecting multilib - firstly, I couldn't get the system to accept normal armv7 packages, only weird multiconfig-armv7 packages. Secondly (and this one is far less significant) our current build system only runs `bitbake asteroid-image` so it didn't really want to add in the one weird exception for this architecture18:24
dodoradiowhat's the advantage of using multiconfig?18:24
dodoradiosorry, what's the advantage of multilib other than the fact that it takes less setup?18:25
dodoradiobecause in my case it seemed to cause repeated issues where the device couldn't install our normal armv7 packages, only packages that were specifically built for the multilib .18:26
