AdrianFkhem: It looks like you are targeting GCC 14 for Scarthgap. Do you know anything about the status of PPC 32 support yet? Is it still like command line images are supported, but Sato is not? Or is it getting worse?10:48
rburtonAdrianF: https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/Recipe_Versions <-- scarthgap comes out before gcc 14.110:53
AdrianFrburton: Thank you for the clarification.11:01
rburtonkhem does have staging branches though, which are useful for testing (especially as i need to test some gcc patches that are not yet in master)11:02
rburtonAdrianF: do you have a business need for ppc32 then?11:02
AdrianFrburton: Yes, we have PPCs that will probably even survive the year 2038.11:11
rburtonfun! :)11:12
rburtonbut thanks for the data point, good to know11:12

khemAdrianF: gcc14 for scarthgap no, it will release in may and scarthgap will be out in april sadly16:00
khemAdrianF: however, I am definitely pushing fixes to recipes to build with it, which is useful when we build scrarthdap on future distros with gcc14 e.g. f4016:00
khemrburton: sure look for kraj/gcc-14 branch on contrib repo16:01
khemAdrianF: ppc32 is still supported in gcc1416:02
khemAdrianF: at certain point you have to stop upgrading wholesale on it16:04
khemright now, I spend more time fixing mips/ppc when upgrading toolchain pieces then I do for other architectures, in fact I am observing the time spent for 32bit arches. (x86 and arm included ) is rising as a whole, so soon whole 32bit will become a concern,16:08

AdrianFkhem: I can see that, and I really appreciate it! It seems to be foreseeable that at some point it will no longer be possible to make Yocto major updates for 32-bit systems. But I could imagine that there are some companies that would, for example, maintain the last Yocto version with 32-bit support as an ultra LTS version. Something like the CIP16:29
AdrianFproject does for the kernel. At least it's better than everyone trying to do it alone.16:29

khemyeah, its the time and time does cost :), I spent 3 full days debugging mips issues during latest glibc 2.39 updates everything else was quick, umpteen times we report issues upstream in qemu or other major components, that affect us because we are trying to support these cases, I have no problems supporting them, its that someone has to spend time and effort doing so17:15

zwelchI'm trying to use the `nvme-cli` recipe in a read-only filesystem image.  Due to its `pkg_postinst_ontarget` task, that fails when building the image; however, the tool works just fine for my purposes without the configuration files that script creates.  I can hack the recipe in meta-oe to remove it, but I can't figure out how to remove that task in an overlay. Any tips?19:06
zwelch... and my answer appears to be adding `pkg_postinst_ontarget:${PN} = ""` to my overlay.  Not exactly intuitive, but I'll take it.19:25

rburtonzwelch: the recipe appears to want a per-machine uuid on /etc.  you should understand what the consequences of that not existing are, and if eg it can just piggyback on systemd's machine-id then stopping that happening in systemd builds would be sensible19:55

zwelchrburton: thanks for the feedback.  We are indeed using systemd, so I will looking into using the machine id that it generates.  So far, we have only been using the nvme CLI to read information off of our m.2 drives, so the lack of a unique id should not matter.  If we start using it to write, then I can see that being a critical issue.21:42
