morthm I have an image file with'WKS_FILE="rockchip.wks" and IMAGE_FSTYPES="wic". I expected bitbake to cerate a wic file with all the partitions, but I can only see a .rootfs.wic file12:42
rburtonmort: check the contents, the filename might be misleading12:43
mortoh I think you're right, I just looked at another yocto system I have laying around which generates a symlink called <machine>-<imagename>.wic, but that turns out to just be a symlink to the .rootfs.wic12:44

hrwmort: build standard images, check which one fits your plans best. copy it, give new name, expand with more packages.13:41
morthrw: the only images I can find in poky/meta/recipes-core/images are very minimal ones, am I missing something?13:43
hrwmort: https://layers.openembedded.org/layerindex/branch/master/layers/13:44
mortI don't know which ones of those provide images13:44
mortanyway I'm gonna interpret this answer as a "no"13:45
hrwmort: https://git.openembedded.org/meta-openembedded/tree/meta-xfce/recipes-core/images/core-image-minimal-xfce.bb is not-so-very-minimal13:48
hrwhttps://git.openembedded.org/meta-openembedded/tree/meta-oe/recipes-core/images/meta-oe-image-all.bb one looks small but list of packages it install is long13:49
morthm just noticed that this image says this when logging in: WARNING: Poky is a reference Yocto Project distribution that should be used for testing and development purposes only. It is recommended that you create your own distribution for production use.14:05
mortI don't understand exactly what it means: am I not supposed to use the 'poky' repository at all? Or should I not be using poky/meta but instead openembedded-core/meta or whatever? Or should I keep using poky just not packagegroup-core-full-cmdline?14:06
mortI had always assumed that the whole idea behind poky was that people could take it and build on top of it, so being told not to use poky for production is surprising14:07
hrwmort: Poky is example distro config14:11
hrwbut that answer can be expanded better by someone who uses OE now (I do not)14:11
KanjiMonstermort: AFAIU the idea is that if you use it in production, you are supposed to define your own DISTRO (via a conf/disto/your-distro.conf and DISTRO="your distro"), and, to get rid of the message, your own motd (which is where this comes from), even if you build on top of yocto14:13

mortit seems like you're actually "supposed to" fork poky? Not include it as a submodule in your own repo14:23
mortat least that's what I'm getting from https://docs.yoctoproject.org/brief-yoctoprojectqs/index.html, where meta layers are added to the poky directory14:23
mortevery actual distro built with yocto I've seen has included poky as a submodule rather than forking poky14:24

mortso this idea is probably old but I want to float it because builds on my laptop keep OOMing unless I limit BB_NUMBER_THREADS17:53
mortwhat if bitbake worked as a make job server, and invoked make/ninja/etc in make job client mode (using kitware's fork of ninja for job client support)17:54
mortlimiting BB_NUMBER_THREADS to something like 2 sucks when both jobs happen to be slow single threaded tasks, but it's necessary because otherwise the worst case is 100 linkers running concurrently and my laptop can't handle that17:55
JaMamort: there are patches on ML to use that fork18:10
mortJaMa: is it something OE is interested in eventually including by default?18:11

JaMamort: I'm restricting P_M for chromium to avoid OOMK while keeping BB_NUMBER_THREADS on reasonable low value like 818:11
JaMaeventually sure, but it might be after it's merged upstream18:12
vmesonmort: it's a good idea. A patch has been posted but not yet merged due to a few concerns, none of which are insurmoutable IMO.18:13
JaMayou can also try pressure regulation, which helps a bit but for me it's applied too late to avoid OOMK (e.g. the pressure is low when bitbake queues nodejs.do_compile and chromium.do_compile to start in parallel) and then it's too late to regulate on bitbake task level18:14

vmesonI'm just back from a week of vacation so I'm once again optimistic that I'll make time to help out with this but I've said that before!18:16
mortthe linker OOM situation is pretty bad, but running 10 linkers at once is at the very least better than running 100 linkers at once heh18:20
