nerdboy | you can try fuzz=3 and see if it applies | 09:11 |
nerdboy | but check it make sure it applied correctly | 09:12 |
nerdboy | in oe-classic, i've had some valid patches fail with quilt | 09:12 |
nerdboy | you might try it by hand with the normal patch command | 09:14 |
linu | nerdboy, ya i will try,you know before i was working on buildroot, this is my first visit into yocto,so i am struggling, i think fuzz=3 may works, i will try | 09:15 |
nerdboy | i've actually added manual patch commands in a do_configure_prepend a couple of times | 09:15 |
nerdboy | again, in oe-classic | 09:15 |
nerdboy | mostly because i didn't want to redo the patch from scratch | 09:15 |
nerdboy | or maybe there's a quilt swicth i could've used | 09:16 |
nerdboy | there should be an OEPATCH_OPTS or something (he said without looking) | 09:17 |
nerdboy | looks like quilt has fuzz so go try it and see... | 09:18 |

D4v33 | Can someone help me understand how I am supposed to use Yocto. I think I understand that it builds a distribution, but how do I use that? Yocto is used to build some version of the linux kernel based on some git repo, if I want to add or modify some drivers do they have to be added to the repo before Yocto builds it or do I do then modification locally and that's what gets built? | 13:04 |
ndec | D4v33: you are mixing up a few things ;-) | 13:04 |
D4v33 | Great thats a start | 13:05 |
ndec | Yocto is an 'overall' project that includes openembedded-core, bitbake, and poky (among other things) | 13:05 |
ndec | poky is a 'reference' distro that is released by Yocto | 13:05 |
D4v33 | OK | 13:05 |
ndec | it comes with the yocto kernel which is indeed supported by yocto. | 13:06 |
ndec | however very often what you want to do is build your own distro , add your own software, and including your own kernel. | 13:06 |
D4v33 | the fsl-community-bsp is where I am comming from has 3 kernels to choose from. | 13:07 |
ndec | generally each 'soc' will indeed provide an OE layer with BSP for their machines. | 13:07 |
ndec | if you are interested in FSL, you can build your 'own' product/distro by using oe-core, meta-fsl and any other layers that has software you need. | 13:08 |
ndec | you can create new layers for your own stuff if you need. | 13:08 |
ndec | (including proprietary if that's needed) | 13:08 |
D4v33 | OK I think. | 13:08 |
*** rainerschuster <rainerschuster!~Adium@firewall.methodpark.de> has left #yocto | 13:09
D4v33 | so if I want to build a particular driver in, say a wireless one where do I start? | 13:09 |
ndec | first, are you able to build an image that works on your board? | 13:10 |
ndec | without this driver | 13:10 |
D4v33 | OK I think I've got that, I did bitbake fsl-image-minimal | 13:10 |
ndec | ok. is your driver in the kernel, or is it an out-of-tree kernel module? | 13:11 |
D4v33 | I need to be able to do both, I guess for now an intree driver | 13:11 |
ndec | if it's in the kernel you need to identify which kernel recipe was used to build your image, and update the defconfig in that recipe. | 13:11 |
D4v33 | can I still use make menuconfig or do I have to treak the defconfig files | 13:12 |
D4v33 | s/treak/tweak | 13:12 |

ndec | let me try quickly | 13:14 |
D4v33 | surely if you don;t use menuconfig you have all the dependencies to resolve? | 13:15 |
ndec | well, i use menuconfig outside of oe... and copy the defconfig file... i just don't need to do that often, so i never tried to find a better solution... | 13:16 |
ndec | well, in fact you can do it from bitbake... i just tried | 13:16 |
ndec | bitbake -c menuconfig <recipe> | 13:16 |
ndec | where <recipe> is the name of your kernel recipe | 13:16 |
D4v33 | let me try | 13:16 |
ndec | so, you have to know that bitbake does all its components 'stuff' in tmp/work/<arch or machine>/components/... | 13:17 |

rburton | like you can't download "apache". you can download apache httpd, or apache tomcat, or this or that | 15:32 |
rburton | oe-core and bitbake are projects under the yocto umbrella | 15:32 |
oswin_ | and poky ? | 15:32 |
Saur | RP: Ok, got it working. You had missed a VariableParse() on the last line... | 15:33 |
rburton | a reference distribution using oe-core and bitbake | 15:33 |
oswin_ | rburton, ok, thanks for your explanations ! | 15:34 |
rburton | poky is primarily a reference distro for our QA purposes to verify that it all actually works | 15:34 |
rburton | you can extend it, or you can use it as a starting point for your own distro, or start from another distro like angstrom | 15:34 |
RP | Saur: oh, I see. you need to poke this into self.expand_cache[cachename].value = value | 15:36 |
RP | Saur: which is horrible :/ | 15:36 |
Saur | RP: self.expand_cache[cachename] = VariableParse(cachename, self, value) | 15:36 |
RP | Saur: no, that will break checksums | 15:36 |
Saur | RP: Isn't that how expandWithRefs() does it? Or what checksums do you mean? | 15:37 |
RP | Saur: you're passing in a pre-expanded version though so you lose the dependency data the way you're doing it | 15:38 |
D4v33 | Noob question: Can yocto create the rootfs or does it just produce binaries? | 15:39 |

LetoThe2nd | rburton: ah found it :) thx for the RTFM! | 20:20 |
rburton | :) | 20:20 |
LetoThe2nd | on that behalf a more generic question - the things in the image .bb can be overwritten by the local.conf, right? | 20:21 |
kergoth | config metadata is generic, recipe metadata is specific, the latter always overrides the former unless the recipe uses ?=, or you use an override | 20:22 |

Zaif | What is the command to clean bitbake? I mean I am getting parse error -> ERROR: ParseError at /yocto/poky/meta/recipes-core/systemd/systemd_206.bb:18: Could not inherit file classes/ptest.bbclass | 21:14 |
Zaif | rburton | 21:14 |
mr_science | clean-sstate i think | 21:16 |
mr_science | don't have a new enough bitbake handy... | 21:17 |
bluelightning | cleaning won't help with that problem | 21:17 |
RP | halstead: autobuilder looks wedged :( | 21:17 |
halstead | RP, Would you like me to clean it up? | 21:18 |
mr_science | yeah, needs a real fix | 21:18 |
halstead | RP, also are bugzilla and the autobuilder web interface fast enough now? | 21:18 |
RP | halstead: Beth reverted back to the dora builder and I think something has gone wrong with that | 21:18 |
*** seanvk <seanvk!seanvk@nat/intel/x-dtvsblzsfuuduhfb> has quit IRC | 21:19
RP | halstead: yes, when I came back my browser window was still timing out but I stopped and refreshed it and it worked fine. Not sure what happened earlier | 21:19 |
RP | halstead: Do you understand why the autobuilder shows a Bus Error like that? | 21:19 |
RP | halstead: http://autobuilder.yoctoproject.org/main/builders/nightly/builds/25/steps/Building%20Images/logs/stdio | 21:19 |
halstead | RP, I lowered the speed of our rsyncs to mirrors. | 21:20 |
RP | halstead: thanks :) | 21:20 |
RP | halstead: trying to tweak things so we generate less "stuff" too | 21:20 |
halstead | RP, Kind of. That was happening only on ab01 before. So we removed it from the pool. | 21:21 |
halstead | RP, It was added back in when Beth reverted. | 21:22 |
halstead | RP, I never did understand why. I think something selinux related was our best guess. | 21:22 |
halstead | I can take it out of the pool and restart the master. | 21:23 |
RP | halstead: so it only happens on ab01? | 21:23 |
halstead | RP: yes. | 21:23 |
Zaif | bluelightning: Any Idea how to clear that error? | 21:23 |
RP | halstead: very strange given nightly used to run there anyway | 21:23 |
halstead | RP: That is true. I didn't notice it was a nightly. It wasn't happening during nightly builds before. | 21:24 |
mr_science | Zaif: you'll need to figure out what's causing it | 21:25 |
mr_science | is the file there? is there a typo/other glitch in it? | 21:25 |
mr_science | etc | 21:25 |
bluelightning | Zaif: I'm not sure how you could have that version of the systemd recipe and not classes/ptest.bbclass, unless you've copied in the former to an old build tree that is | 21:26 |
Zaif | mr_science: I did a blunder.. I just copy passted an old recipe | 21:26 |
halstead | RP and line 114 is cat <<EOM | 21:26 |
Zaif | and ran the build | 21:26 |
halstead | RP, So ab01 is writing to /tmp which it should not. | 21:27 |
*** walters <walters!~walters@cpe-173-88-94-148.columbus.res.rr.com> has quit IRC | 21:27
RP | halstead: surely /tmp is a writeable location? | 21:28 |
halstead | RP, It is but it's limited to half the available memory (32GB) since it's tmpfs. | 21:29 |
RP | halstead: its running the build in there? | 21:30 |
mr_science | Zaif: if you're copying stuff from elsewhere/older/newer, you'll need to make sure get all the right pieces | 21:30 |
halstead | RP, I think I might start provisioning a dedicated large /tmp partition since this crops up from time to time. | 21:30 |
RP | halstead: there is no way it should be using 32GB of /tmp | 21:31 |
halstead | RP I think what happens is a default checkout puts all sorts of things in /tmp (http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/yocto-autobuilder/tree/config/autobuilder.conf.example) | 21:32 |
halstead | RP and sometimes it doesn't get changed to point at /srv/www/vhosts | 21:32 |
mr_science | Zaif: but i specifically crafted my rpi-xorg image to not use systemd so i probably can't help debug that piece... | 21:32 |
mr_science | and my classic images are too old for that... | 21:33 |
RP | halstead: we need to figure out when those aren't getting changed and fix that then | 21:33 |
RP | halstead: perhaps make the default value such that it doesn't exist | 21:34 |
RP | halstead: /nowhere/ or something | 21:34 |
Zaif | mr_science: ok. Just checking mailing list archives, If I could get any help.. | 21:34 |
halstead | RP, That sounds like a good idea to me. Then builds would fail right away. | 21:35 |
RP | halstead: exactly | 21:35 |
mr_science | just make sure you copy whatever the recipe/include file reference | 21:35 |
halstead | RP, Anyway while I cleanup AB01 shall I get all the others ready to go again? | 21:35 |
RP | halstead: yes please. I think Beth is out for a few days now and I could really use the autobuilder working | 21:36 |
mr_science | patches/other files, inc/bb files, and even bbclass files if needed | 21:36 |
halstead | RP, No problem. | 21:36 |
mr_science | the last part might be less than obvious... | 21:36 |

RP | halstead: thanks, I've set a master build away | 21:50 |
RP | halstead: so what was it? | 21:51 |
halstead | RP, It's because on all the refreshed builders pokybuild is in /home instead of /srv/home but ab01 still needs the builds to run in /srv | 21:51 |
RP | halstead: ah, that would explain it | 21:52 |
halstead | RP, Because it hasn't been rebuilt to the new spec the slave was running /home and filled that partition. | 21:52 |

Zaif | mr_science , bluelightning : I repeated the same blunder of copy pasting recipes without looking out for which poky version they are compatible. I am using old poky Danny 8.0 and just copied systemd from openembedded-core layer. That's where my build was broken. Removing that solved the issue. | 22:30 |
