| silbe | FWIW I found the provider selection logic in bitbake/lib/bb/providers.py but couldn't figure out (within reasonable time) how PACKAGE_ARCH comes into play (maybe somewhere inside the cache implementation?). As a work-around I've now made our own recipe machine/SoC-specific as well; this seems to fix this issue.
