JosefHolzmayrThewyre: whats the point of a generic user on an embedded system?07:55
JosefHolzmayrTheusually its rather a "i want my stuff to run as this user". where "my stuff" is exactly the application stack that I just referred to.07:56

JosefHolzmayrThewyre: things don't become more secure just because you add a random non-root user.07:56

JosefHolzmayrTherunning things as non-root increases security. so you have to look and decide what runs as non-root, and make those do so. and when you're doing that, you're already in the perfect place to add the users as needed.07:57

qschulzTartarus: honestly, I would say no. It encourages people to not point to licenses in the source code which defeats the whole purpose of LIC_FILES_CHKSUM08:33
qschulzdvorkindmitry: I think what you're after is LICENSE_PATH, c.f. https://docs.yoctoproject.org/ref-manual/variables.html#term-LICENSE_PATH08:36
qschulze.g. https://cgit.openembedded.org/meta-openembedded/tree/meta-oe/conf/layer.conf#n4708:37
qschulzyou still need to point to a file or a section of a file expliciting it is of the license listed in LICENSE, but the content of the deployed license will be of the one in LICENSE_PATH IIRC. This is useful when you add a license which isn't already present in any layer, then the build system complains about a non-existing license or something like that08:39
qschulzdvorkindmitry: ah, it was said already, just didn't read the whole backlog :p08:42

zigaI watched the entire Holzmayr's playlist and created my notes. So I am a beginner already... I just don't want to start in the wrong direction and loose too much time. So QT5-meta can be solved with an already existing layer "meta-qt5" (thank you qschulz). I also checked and it looks like "libqwt-qt5" is part of this layer (https://github.com/meta-qt5/meta-qt5/tree/master/recipes-qt/qwt) I also remembered (thank you Josef) that you use "boost"09:41

I.e., say we have a recipe foo.bb that uses the submodule: fetcher, then the repository used by the foo recipe is a submodule _of the layer repository_. rfs613qschulz: ah, thanks.16:40
qschulzvd: ah never mind, read machine conf instead of machine features16:40
marc1I'm looking at this commit from meta-freescale: https://github.com/Freescale/meta-freescale/commit/19cbde82409d5cb9d93d2e3a8cc9394497f99ebd16:40
qschulzi am too now16:41
marc1And I don't understand the reason behind this...16:41
marc1Why would we set COMPATIBLE_MACHINE?16:41
rburtonyou'd have to ask khem what prompted that16:42
rburtoni'd have said that's overkill16:42
marc1I mean uuu can run on any platform. I understand it is mostly used for native builds16:42
rfs613seems they should have called it imx-updater ;-)16:46
frosteyesDoes the kernel recipes have a way for build the userspace tools available in the kernel?16:53
frosteyesNeed the usbip tool https://github.com/torvalds/linux/tree/master/tools/usb/usbip so was just thinking on there was a way of building tools in the kernel..16:54
vdI feel like development/debug/release profile (or whatever you name it) is more than just a distro feature, but more a combined machine/distro feature. e.g. a development environment must be enabled on both a developer-friendly hardware as well as being a software (distro) choice17:00
frosteyesseems other have been there :) https://lists.yoctoproject.org/g/yocto/topic/86249103?p=,,,20,0,0,0::recentpostdate/sticky,,,20,0,0,8624910317:01

RPzeddii: I assume I can remove that python3 module you added for the kernel? I don't think it is actually needed and it saves me trying to resolve the license issue17:37
RPzeddii: ah, I just saw qschulz's reply :( Why is this not building in places I'd expect then? :/17:39
RPoh, probably as it only needs the native version. That would explain things17:40

wyrehi guys, could I set the password in a separate file for dealing with root setting password?21:28
wyreI've been reading this https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/FAQ:How_do_I_set_or_change_the_root_password21:28
wyrebut ... I wouldn't like to set the pass in the recipe file because I'm doing scv with git21:28
wyreso I guess I could do the recipe to fetch the password form a separate file, right?21:29
Saurwyre: That page is a bit obsolete. The nonstandard -P option has been removed again. Use -p instead, which takes a hashed value.21:30
wyreI see21:30
wyretyvm Saur 😉21:31
wyreSaur, with md5 for example?21:45
Saurwyre: I just updated the wiki page.21:45
sgwwyre: Where are you setting the EXTRA_USERS_PARAM?  In your local.conf, which you are maintain with GIT?21:46
sgwYou could have your local.conf include another file containing the EXTRA_USERS_PARAM variable if needed.21:47
sgwSaur: you beat me to it!  I would have updated it you did not, I also like the python solution vs adding the mcrypt package.21:48

khemmarc1: it did not build for non fsl socs so even though it is a generic kind of, it perhaps is not tested for other socs so point was to limit it to where its tested22:13
wyrewhat's apt package for?22:14
wyreapparently 'apt' command is not able though I've included it in my image recipe ..22:14
