jclsnI am just wondering: What is actually achieved by the virtual-binds recipe being built by default?10:39
jclsnIt seems like a portion of the /var partition that is writeable, although the / partition including /var is read-only, which is not persistent10:39
jclsnSo like a storage for files that need to be written, but are not important enough to keep around10:40
jclsnThus it will get in the way of my persistent backlight problem and I should probably remove virtual-binds. I am just wondering what consequences that might have, because there is probably a good reason for it to be activated by default10:41
qschulzjclsn: probably for kernel logs/syslogs to persist and help debugging10:42
jclsnBut it is not persistent10:42
qschulzMy bad, didn't read carefully the message :/10:46
qschulzbut that would be an answer, many programs actually need to write to /var/log, and I assume they probably assume it's writeable10:46

jclsnhmm pity that no one is here that has in-depth knowledge about volatile-binds10:53
jclsnRP: ?10:53
jclsnqschulz: No need to apologize. You are trying to be helpful as always. Thank you :)10:57
qschulzjclsn: it's a bit hard to find a compromise between answering/trying to guide fast and leaving it unanswered10:58
qschulzI usually try to spend some time if I see the last question hasn't been answered for a few hours or something10:59
jclsnBut you should not feel responsible for my problems10:59
qschulzmaybe other people do work the same way and I basically make it harder for you to get proper help10:59
qschulzwho knows /me shrugs10:59
jclsnNo, you are very helpful most of the time11:00
jclsnEven now you were. I just have not found my solution yet11:00
RPjclsn: I don't know that code11:04
RPour history is very small devices with flash where you didn't want a ton of writes to the rootfs so this probably stems from that11:05
jclsnYour answer actually makes sense. I think the volatile-binds are there for logs and host keys etc. Since we have the read-only rootfs the host key get lost after every reboot, because the voltile binds are not persistent. But they make debugging during one boot possible. So I guess the most easy way is to get rid of the volatile-binds, use a separate read-write /var partition and if I want to have11:05
jclsnsome ultra-persistent configurations, I can use an overlayfs from my /data partition11:05
jclsnRP: So reduce the number of logs being stored you guess?11:05
RPjclsn: I'm totally guessing but yes. Keep in mind this stuff has been messed around for over a decade too so it is also possible the setup is now just a bit corrupted11:06
jclsnRP: I thought you were the ultra guru to poke here. If not you, who is it? ^^ Are they gone already11:07
jclsn?11:07
RPjclsn: No one person knows everything about the system. I'm one of the few of the early people left and I do my best to try and keep everything going the write way but with the shear scope and number of directions the project gets pulled, it is challenging :/11:08
RPpeople don't realise that often to answer a "simple" question like this I'd have to spend an hour remembering things about it and/or spend that time reading logs and the history11:10
jclsnRP: I understand. Is the project being funded btw? I mean no one can maintain this in their free time in the long run11:10
RPjclsn: I'm funded and we do have a few others but mostly not focused on active development11:10
qschulzjclsn: funds aside, RP has been working too much for too long already. We're lacking contributors/maintainers/reviewers for a long time now :/11:10
RPjclsn: for me the problem is burnout. I can't do everything (or know everything)11:11
jclsnqschulz: I would really like to but my current company does only care for our internal tickets11:11
qschulzand having RP digging into things, amplifies this issue because then we don't grow the knowledge base among contributors/users and this increases even more the pressure on the single point of failure :/11:12
qschulzjclsn: it was not specifically directed at you, just to be clear :)11:12
landgrafjclsn: according to original commit message volatile-binds is for systemd-enabled systems only11:12
RPjclsn: there are a lot of companies doing that and assuming someone else will make the upstream work :/11:12
landgrafI guess it can be disabled if you don't have one11:12
jclsnRP: Yeah I know that feeling. I have been renovating my flat the past 9 monts, working full-time plus some hobby projects, plus trying to have some free time11:12
jclsnI wouldn't know how to do this if I had a family11:13
jclsnAnd I guess some of you do11:13
RPlandgraf: that sounds right and would explain why I have a gap in knowledge as I try and avoid systemd :D11:13
landgrafRP: Today will be my last bug triage meetign as huawei employee btw :-(11:13
RPlandgraf: I'm really sorry to hear that, you've done some really useful/helpful things11:14
landgrafI'd keep bug assigned to me for now but I don't know yet if I'll find something YP related11:14
jclsnRP: I know, I also think they should treat the environment they live and work in with more reciprocity11:15
RPlandgraf: YP skills are very much in demand so I hope so! :)11:15
RPjclsn: Yocto Project is having a bit of a membership recruitment drive at the moment as we know the current situation is going to end badly11:15
landgrafRP: will see. I really like the project (taking into account I saw yocto for the first time one year ago :D )11:15
landgrafso my yocto skills are quite limited by fixing small bugs here and there11:16
jclsnRP: Membership recruitment drive?11:17
RPlandgraf: I wouldn't underestimate yourself as you have dived into some complex things which many others struggle with. Seeing new people getting involved is one of the things which gives me hope for the future!11:17
RPjclsn: trying to increase https://www.yoctoproject.org/ecosystem/members/11:18
landgrafjclsn: many companies use YP without contributing fixes/patches/enhancements back to the project.11:20
landgrafwhich doubles work of all parties  involved. Sharing is better11:21
jclsnRP: Oh only industry giants or FAANGs mostly11:22
qschulzlandgraf: upstreaming costs money/time in short term and not all employees are willing to do it without it being enforced company policy11:22
landgrafqschulz: I know this unfortunately11:22
landgrafdownstream patches are evil :)11:23
qschulzlandgraf: and they cost so much in the long run11:26
landgrafqschulz: I/ve been workeing mostly with opensource so "Upsteam first!" was the main rule11:27

agherzansakoman45: I'd like to propose a backport of https://lists.openembedded.org/g/openembedded-core/message/169762 in kirkstone13:21
agherzanNot only that specific patch but the entire series without the restructuring13:21
agherzanMainly:13:22
agherzan1. shadow sub id files13:22
agherzan2. patch for shadow nss13:22
agherzan3. cleanup subid files in the current implementation (without rewriting things)13:22
agherzanWould that be acceptable?13:22

Guest63Hi qschulz14:41
Guest63I was able to build i915 firmware into kernel image by adding `RDEPENDS_${PN} += " linux-firmware-i915 "` in kernel recipe14:41
Guest63but the downside is this installs firmware in rootfs14:42
rburtonthats because you set it as a runtime depends, so it's doing exactly what you want14:44
*** pbergin <pbergin!~pbergin@ua-213-113-159-147.bbcust.telenor.se> has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving)14:44
qschulzGuest63: you didn't answer the question :)14:46
qschulzhow did you get the firmware built into the kernel binary?14:46
qschulzbecause RDEPENDS is definitely not the way to go for this to happen and I'm wondering how you did it14:46
qschulz(DEPENDS on linux-firmware is the only correct way BTW)14:47
qschulzand you don't need any RDEPENDS because that's not what you want and it's not needed anyway if you correctly put the firmware blob inside the kernel binary14:48
qschulz(I'm genuinely asking how you did it, so we can work from there to undo or adapt what's been done so far into something that could work)14:49
