walterI finally discovered how things like a `usbgadget` distro feature get's "translated" into actuall packages that are installed. For usbgadget specifically, it's an RRECOMMENDS from packagegroup-basic.bb. https://git.openembedded.org/meta-openembedded/tree/meta-oe/recipes-core/packagegroups/packagegroup-basic.bb#n4310:02
walterNow, what does RRECOMENDS on `kernel-module-g-ether` do? Does it only install the module if it's enabled, or does it also enable it? I can't seem to find anything related to this in code.10:04
walterMy impression is that you also need to menuconfig&diffconfig to generate a fragment and SRC_URI:append it.10:06
walterWouldn't it be better if a DISTRO/MACHINE_FEATURE also enables a kernel module, not just RRECOMMEND it. Or am I missing something?10:07
*** vladest is back10:08
mcfriskwalter: problem is that RRECOMMENDS lists binary packages. kernel driver support can be built-in or a module, which creates a binary package. So the binary package may or may not exist, depending on kernel config. Thus it is tricky to add kernel module packages as runtime dependencies to anything.10:09
mcfriskalso related, most sample machines in poky thus install all kernel modules to all images by default, using MACHINE_EXTRA_RRECOMMENDS += "kernel-modules" in machine config.10:11
walterI see. Thanks.10:13
mcfriskif image size is reduced with NO_RECOMMENDATIONS = "1", then users need to define these kernel packages dependencies and install them to images manually, which depends on the exact kernel config used (if package even exists)10:13
mcfriskwould be nice to have a dependency to kernel features, if specific driver or config is enabled, agnostic of built-in or module, but that does not exist10:13

walterAfter recent changes in master branches, not sure which, it seems that llvm-native, rust-native and cargo-native are being recompiled after almost every change of distro features. I don't see anything in llvm_git.bb that might indicate the need to recompile after every distro feature change.14:24

rburtonwalter: the root there would be llvm as rust depends on llvm and cargo depends on rust. first, be sure you've turned on hash equivilance.14:30
rburtonwalter: second, have a look at the full build log and see what rebuilds before llvm. my hunch is that you're causing a rebuild of python-native which can bubble out badly if you don't have hashequiv enabled.14:31

rfmerrillwalter which of the two overhead factors mentioned there are you referring to?22:24
*** Fanfwe is back22:28
walterYou have IMAGE_ROOTFS_SIZE, which is only used if it's bigger than the actual size of the rootfs multiplied by the IMAGE_OVERHEAD_FACTOR, then you add IMAGE_ROOTFS_EXTRA_SPACE to the result. So, if you set IMAGE_ROOTFS_SIZE to a big enough number and set extra space to zero, that's the exact size that you get. I think.22:30
walteroh... there's an explenation in here: https://docs.yoctoproject.org/ref-manual/variables.html#term-IMAGE_ROOTFS_SIZE22:31
rfmerrillI guess what confuses me about those variable names is that they say "ROOTFS" in them which I would assume means they're referring to, well, the rootfs, not the entire disk image including all the partitions22:33
