qschulzwalter: I do both, but it's become near impossible to build vanilla poky from master since it brings llvm+rust and I very often get OOM09:12
qschulz(like my laptop freezes for 10-15min or even more before the OOM triggers :/)09:13
qschulzwalter: actually, your input (and patches) as a beginner *now* is very much appreciated since once you have more experience some confusing things in the past become clear (because of implied or double meaning)09:14
qschulzwalter: ??= operator means it can be overridden by ?= or = anywhere, including conf files (e.g. local.conf, distro.conf, machine.conf, etc..) or bbappend, regardless of the parsing order09:25
qschulzif you have a "leaf" layer (that is a layer that is only included for one product line and not meant to be expanded, then I find it fine to have a bbappend which changes the default value of some variables, e.g. here have PACKAGECONFIG ?= "" in there)09:26
qschulzif you're changing a recipe variable from a conf file, you'll need the :pn-<recipename> override09:27

litbso I'm not pretty sure state of affairs of python in yocto is broken: cmake's official way of finding and linking python needs the target interpreter to be executed during build time (if needed using qemu user, with CMAKE_CROSSCOMPILING_EMULATOR). but yocto does _not_ put the python interpreter within ${bindir} into the sysroot-destir11:34
litbso when target/host and build machine is incompatible or you don't pull python-native, linking against python libs does not work reliably unfortunately11:35
litbI'm thinking about including ${bindir} in SYSROOT_DIRS of the python3 recipe.. and then add a class to all recipes (INHERIT) that removes the bindir from their recipe-sysroot dir except for those recipes that uses the "official" cmake way of finding python11:36

litbI wonder whether it's a bad idea to create a  python3-bins.bb  entirely new recipe  but that _includes_ python3_%.bb  and that _only_ adds its binfiles to the sysroot-destdir? so that in my recipe  I can simply DEPEND from python3 and python-bins.   sounds like bad idea!11:40

rburtonlitb: you might be missing a python3targetconfig inherit so that native python pretends to be target12:27
CroftonWhat is the point of that?12:28
rburtonthe "normal" way to build python stuff is to run python code, which will tell you about itself: that is the native python. that class configures python to lie and tell you about the target setup.12:29
rburtonpython is also on the list of things that Does Cross Terribly, underneath clang12:30
CroftonI am sure I ahve palces that need that :) and have hacks to work around this12:30

litbrburton I don't really want native python to pretend to be target. I want the target python to be in the sysroot because cmake needs it and the interpreter in the sysroot12:53
litbbut yocto does unfortunately not do that and many packages use deprecated cmake find functions that break if the targhet interpreter is in PATH12:54
rburtonlitb: then you're going to be fighting the system. we've set it up so that native py can pretend to be target python.12:54
litb"the "normal" way to build python stuff is to run python code, which will tell you about itself: that is the native python. that class configures python to lie and tell you about the target setup."  ahhh I see, thanks! I guess this does work with setuptools but not with cmake :(12:54

qschulzhttps://docs.yoctoproject.org/next/ref-manual/variables.html#term-PREFERRED_TOOLCHAIN_TARGET the docs isn't in master yet (though in master-next)14:00
LetoThe2ndqschulz: thx 👀14:00
agodardkanavin: ok, thing is here my build dir (/home/builder/yp/bitbake-builds?) is empty, I was starting from scratch. I'll take a closer look at the code then14:01
kanavinagodard, it's possible the --global logic got broken at some point14:01
walterqschulz: I understand the meaning of that operator, it's very clear on that parts, but that PACKAGECONFIG doesn't feel like a global variable, or is it? Isn't it scoped to the lmsensors-config package? The part I didn't understand was all that `VAR:pn-package`, is it some sort of scope? Or how does it work?14:03
qschulzwalter: it's a recipe variable, scoped to lmsensors-config *recipe*14:04
kanavinagodard, I think I found it. You need to use 'settings set --global', not 'settings --global set'14:04
kanavinthere's a mistake in the argument parser code14:04
qschulzwalter:  VAR:pn-recipe (and not pn-package) overrides VAR when in context of the recipe named "recipe"14:04
kanavinwhere --global is added to both settings as a whole and set/unset specifically14:05
walterI see. and it can be overriden from random places, like from the image file?14:05
qschulzwalter: it can be set from outside the recipe context14:05
qschulzbut remember that things done within one context cannot escape that context14:05
qschulzso if you have VARA in recipe A yuou cannot modify from recipe B14:06
qschulzbut you can from conf file X (if X is used somehow)14:06
qschulzsimilarly, when you modify a variable from recipe A's task T's context, it'll not appear modified to recipe A's task U's context14:06
qschulzregardless if task U depends on task T14:07
walterI see. and what about `images/my-image.bb`, can it modify a recipe context?14:07
qschulzno, it's a recipe14:07
qschulzyou have package recipes and image recipes14:07
*** dr_kokobas <dr_kokobas!~Thunderbi@user/dr-kokobas:29317> has joined #yocto14:07
qschulzthey both are recipes so in that case the same restrictions wrt context apply14:08
qschulzif you need to modify recipes/my-recipe.bb from images/my-image.bb, you cannot and you likely want a conf/distro/my-distro.conf instead14:08
walterOh, I thought the image was something more "global" like the conf files. Thanks. This wasn't clear, not sure if it's an RTFM problem, though I went over it in the begginign from start to finish, or it's not in the manual.14:09
qschulzwalter: this context thing is not well documented at the moment, and I discovered a few things recently I would rather have not that complexify this context representation I had in my head14:09
qschulzso not sure how to properly document this :/14:09
qschulzwalter: remember we have two docs also, docs.yoctoproject.org and docs.yoctoproject.org/bitbake14:10

walterSo, when I started I kind of gotten overwhelmed by how many ways you can do one thing... and all this build conf, layer conf, distro, image and recipe, and I didn't know what to do first, So I'm thinkinng that I should create some sort of "quick start guide for noobs" that we could put into the docs if you feel like it could be useful for others.14:16
kanavinagodard, patch sent, pls test (but it should work, as bitbake-selftest relies on it and passes)14:16

walterIt's one think to read detailed stuff about each part of the process, it's another to have some sort of "guide" on how get started on something. So I started by playing around with an existing board that doesn't yet have a DTS in mainline.14:17
qschulzthis probably would fit inside the overview-manual?14:18

Guest20Hey, all. I just got transferred to a team using Yocto for their embedded board. My first task is trying to debug a GPS issue. The box runs a ublox M8 chip. I'm essentially trying to add 'ubxtool' to the image and failing. Any tips? our poky version currently is 3.1918:48

rburtonfray: latest ubuntu/rust mystery is very weird problems in tail, i suspect readlinkat is misbehaving... i shall try and make a minimal test case later this week22:35
khemfray: is any of coreutils involved in some form on fault path ?22:35
*** KanjiMonster is now away: disconnected22:36
rburtoninstall and tail both behave very oddly under pseudo when you use the rust versions from ubuntu 251022:36
rburtongonna send a patch to make hosttools use the gnu versions22:37
khemOK thats what I was trying to arrive at :) if its the new rusty version uutils or good'ol coreutils22:37
khemdoes the rust version link to glibc or is a static binary22:38
rburtonhttps://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1602822:38
rburtongood news is that it uses the libc crate so still hits glibc22:38
rburton<phew>22:38
* khem looks for a 25.10 container 22:41

walterLooks like without a distro, core-image-sato is also missing some required feature. It probably needs a patch, just like the one that I've sent for core-image-weston. I'll look into it in the morning.23:56
