LetoThe2ndkanavin: concerning bitbake-setup, my current learnings are that the state/hashserv thing is essentially enabled by default with no fallback, and that the resulting build setup tries to use user namespaces, which conflicts with AppArmor in the form of broken fetching. There's a couple of other possibly personal things, but those two I consider very problematic.11:12
kanavinLetoThe2nd, the apparmor/namespace thing is not specific to bitbake-setup. It's going to happen in plain poky master checkout as well.11:13

kanavinLetoThe2nd, websockets is just basically another host requirement that should be added to yocto manuals. You need to look in conf/auto.conf to see it.11:16
*** amitk <amitk!~amit@58.84.60.55> has quit IRC (Quit: Lost terminal)11:16
kanavinLetoThe2nd, you may not be convinced, but you should trust a bit more what I and ross are saying. bitbake-setup literally checks out the same code that poky does, and there's no 'special apparmor setting' anywhere in it.11:16
LetoThe2ndkanavin: like said, I'm just right now re-testing.11:17
rburtonthere is a number of ways that the apparmor thing isn't triggered: my build machine uses kerberos for auth so the network disabling doesn't get used, so the apparmor check never has to happen11:17
kanavinrburton, but putting bitbake-setup and poky side by side on the same machine means they will behave the same. I feel Josef is too quick to assign blame :-/11:18
LetoThe2ndkanavin: I feel you should put a bit more trust in that I *really* try everything two, usually even three times before stepping up here and asking.11:19
LetoThe2ndso if I do 5, 6, 7 builds, and always see the plain poky one pass, the bitbake-setup ones fail, then its a logical assumption. please don't take it personally, I'm just the stand-in at the moment for average Joe who tries to get started.11:20
rburtonLetoThe2nd: if you have a setup where poky master with a fresh build tree doesn't produce apparmor warnings but the same repo with bitbake-setup does then i'd really like to see your machine because that's unexpected. key point: fresh build tree.11:25
kanavinkey point 2: poky master, not anything else11:25
LetoThe2ndrburton: thats exactly the point. at this very moment, the build is running. poky master as of *right* *now*. all caches cold. build is happily chugging away.11:26
LetoThe2ndjust poky master. fully default local.conf right after oe-init-env.11:26
rburtonand a fresh bitbake-setup warns still?11:26
LetoThe2ndonce it finishes, I'll re-try bitbake-setup. will take a bit of time - not super high powered, and as I said, all caches cold.11:27
rburtonthe check is done before bitbake does anything useful, so i expect bitbake -n <any recipe> would be a good enough test11:28
LetoThe2ndI can also abort the build if nobody complains later that I should have it let finish, but right now its at task 1650 of about 4000, and no problems yet.11:29
RPLetoThe2nd: FWIW I did change my build system recently and it detected and told me off about the apparmor issue (an ubuntu system)11:29
rburtonif the test is "the apparmor thing" then you can abort once it's running tasks11:29
LetoThe2ndok, then I'll shut the build down and re-try bitbake setup.11:30
walterI usually get in and get my hands dirty on any project I can think of, but with Yocto, I feel like I need some guidance, more than I can easily find in the docs and repositories. Do you folks have any books that you can recommend? I'm thinking of buying the one by Salvador and Angolini, it's about 2.5 years old and it's DRM free. No need for pesky apps.11:30
rburtonwalter: have you tried docs.yoctoproject.org?11:31
rburtoni've flicked through a copy of Embedded Linux Development using Yocto Project and it didn't seem bad11:32
walterI'm even grepping it locally, but there are many assumed things that I can't find anywhere.11:32
rburtonwalter: would be useful if you could write those down, so they can be added to the docs :)11:33
walterAnd I'm grepping for variables and look at the code to see how they are used. But I'm still comming out short.11:33
RPwalter: as rburton said, some pointers on what is missing would be really helpful11:36
walterSo, for example, I've tried different ways of adding a DTS to my kernel, that's easy to find. But, once I want to optimize a bit, this is where I'm running into problems. I'm looking at the `devicetree` class, I read what's there, I look at the code for it... but I'm not able to figure out how to get around the fact that I'm using `kernel-devicetree`.11:37
kanavinwalter, but reading the code is better than reading a book, any book. Code is the authoritative source for how things actually work, and books, especially printed books in comparison are bound to be both incomplete and out of date.11:37
RPwalter: hmm, that is a breadth issue. I personally wouldn't have a clue about that :/11:39
LetoThe2ndrburton: for the record, my *guess* is that the apparmor check is not triggering correctly, respectively that there is *SOME* condition under which bitbake decides to either use user namespaces or not. just kicked off the bitbake-setup build here, and it failed again.11:39
walterkanavin: yes, but at one point, there are so many things that it starts to get overwelming, especially when you can't make much progress... probably because my assumptions of how things should work are wrong.11:39
RPLetoThe2nd: I'm sure you'd probably said this several times but how is it failing specifically?11:40
LetoThe2ndno warning or mention of apparmor on either. just the observation that on plain poky the build passes and fetches things, where as on the bitbake-setup one the wget fetcher falls over.11:40
RPLetoThe2nd: the normal OE sanity tests don't run if you use the fetcher API directly which is what kanavin is doing in bitbake-setup11:41
LetoThe2ndRP: bitbake-setup itself works fine. its the resulting build setup which falls over.11:41

jmdSaur: SRC_URI = "https://github.com/JulietaUla/Montserrat/archive/refs/heads/master.zip"11:44
qschulzwalter: the biggest issue is that this is dependent on the version of the kernel. Aarch64 platforms always had the vendor in the path I think, but Aarch32 (arch/arm in the kernel) only "recently" (a couple of years ago)11:44
rburtonjmd: the auto-generated github /archive/ tarballs can/will/do change over time, which means that suddenly your checksums are no longer valid. either use a proper tarball, or fetch git with the git fetcher11:44

yanndWhat's the role of the base.bbclass in bitbake repo, then?  From its do_build implementation I infered it was meant to be usable as a base.13:02

kanavinLetoThe2nd, crazy idea. You said that things work when building e.g. automake-native (few sstate requests), but fail when building core-image-minimal (a lot of sstate requests). Is there something that thinks you are doing a DoS attack, and then disables network access to that host?13:24
kanavinif so, then this should happen on any host distro or container that is on the network you're in. Can you try from a different network provider?13:26

rburtonkhem: pretty sure clang doesn't need clang to build right21:00
rburtonthough good news: there are no zero binaries that get randomly copied from native build trees and reused21:01
rburtonthe tblgen ones get installed properly and clang-tidy-blaa gets built natively by clang itself as god intended21:01
